PIPELINE MARKING COLOUR GUIDE

The British Standard
BS. 1710 : 1984 'Identification of pipelines' recommends a system for the identification of pipelines & contents including when & where marking should be carried out.

Basic Identification Colours
Pipe contents are divided into 8 different categories allocating a specific colour for each.

PIPELINE CONTENTS: Water
COLOUR: Green
B.S. CODE No.: 12 D 45

PIPELINE CONTENTS: Steam
COLOUR: Silver Grey
B.S. CODE No.: 10 A 03

PIPELINE CONTENTS: Oils- mineral, vegatable or animal Combustable liqiuds
COLOUR: Brown
B.S. CODE No.: 06 C 39

PIPELINE CONTENTS: Gases in either gaseous or liquefied condition (except air)
COLOUR: Yellow Ochre
B.S. CODE No.: 08 C 39

PIPELINE CONTENTS: Acids & Alkalis
COLOUR: Violet
B.S. CODE No.: 22 C 37

PIPELINE CONTENTS: Air
COLOUR: Light Blue
B.S. CODE No.: 20 E 51

PIPELINE CONTENTS: Other Liquids
COLOUR: Black
B.S. CODE No.: 00 E 53

PIPELINE CONTENTS: Electrical Services and Ventilation ducts
COLOUR: Orange

Safety Colours
British Standards allocate 3 colours for further identifcation as follows:-

Fire fighting
COLOUR: Red

Warning of Danger
COLOUR: Yellow
B.S. CODE No: 08 E 51

Fresh water
COLOUR: Mid-blue
B.S. CODE No: 18 E 53
